Slovakia's accession to the EU: A return to the west or a seized opportunity?

This year, 18 years have passed since the moment Slovakia became a member of the European Union. Currently, Slovakia is a long-time member of the Union, however, this status has not always been self-evident. At the turn of millennia, Slovakia was in the middle of an accession process, which was marked with success, as well as problems. This bachelor thesis focuses on the accession process of Slovakia to the European Union in the years 1994-2004. Using theoretical principles of constructivism and post-structuralism, the author is analysing nominalisation and predicalisation of the European Union in Slovak public discourse based on two logical principles - logic of expected consequences and logic of appropriateness. Furthermore, this thesis focuses on which of these logical approaches was prevalent in the public discourse. Author works with materials from political and media sphere from a given period. The first part of the thesis focuses on the theoretical and methodological background necessary for the analysis. In the following part, author describes historical context of the period. In the empirical chapter, author analyses chosen relevant materials. In the last part of the thesis, author provides answers to research questions.

Norwegian Accession Process to the EC/EU Compared with Denmark and Sweden

In the second half of the twentieth century Norway repeatedly made efforts to become a member of the European Communities, which were later incorporated into the newly created European Union. Two referendums were held - in 1972 and 1994 and in both of them Norwegian citizens decided that Norway will not become a member of the EC/EU. Outcomes of the referendums were narrow, though. Interesting fact is, that referendums in the neighbor states - Denmark (1972) and Sweden (1994) ended up in favor of the European Communities/ the European Union. Bachelor thesis called "Norwegian Accession Process to the EC/EU Compared with Denmark and Sweden" concentrates on reasons of the different outcome of referendums in Norway compared to Denmark and Sweden. These Scandinavian countries have many similar characteristics, therefore was expected similar outcome. In my opinion there are three main reasons for the different results of the referendums. Firstly, there are Norwegian specifics, such as widely popular fishing and protection of agriculture. Second are economic reasons that are linked to big profits from crude oil and natural gas export. The "Non-citizen" Issue in Latvia during the EU Accession Process

The aim of this thesis is to examine the attitude of the European Union to the non- citizen issue in Latvia during the accession talks and its impact on legislative changes in Latvia in this area. The thesis asks such questions as whether Latvia has fulfilled all formal and informal criteria of the accession to the European Union concerning non-citizens and whether the recommendations that were part of the European Commission's regular reports were effective. Further I would like to answer the question how important the other two international bodies were, the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe and the Council of Europe, and to what extent the European Union was dependent on their recommendations. Using primary and secondary sources, I will try to show that the main aim of the reports was to improve the situation of non-citizens in Latvia, bringing in the standards of the European Union. Becoming a member of the European Union, Latvia has theoretically fulfilled the required conditions; the question is what the situation has been like in practice.

Supranational and intergovernmental approach to the accession process of Montenegro to the European Union

The volume deals with the analysis of the relationship of the two dominant theoretical approaches of European integration - supranational and intergovernmental - towards the EU enlargement policy on the example of the accession process of Montenegro. The research goes into depth by analysing not the complex accession process as such, but the relations and attention of various European institutions and the EU member states to the particular and deliberately selected negotiation chapters of the Acquis Communautaire. The main aim of the thesis is to find out to what extent and whether at all does the behaviour of the EU institutions and its member states by the accession process correspond with the internal structure of the EU policies and competences stipulated in the EU treaties. The thesis succeeded to show that there is no reason to believe that the activities of the supranational institutions of the EU - the Commission and the Parliament - are dominant by chapter which is closely connected to the exclusive competence of the EU or that they would pay any special attention to this chapter. Turkey and the EU: Analysis of the factors hindering and driving the accession process

The aim of this work is to analyse the factors that affect the candidacy of Turkey to the European Union. The thesis is divided into two chapters, the first of which presents Turkey's own national development and its relations with the European Communities from a historical perspective. This chapter is supplemented with insights into the current situation of the accession chapters. The second part is devoted to the current and specific factors that have potential to influence the accession process. The most nominated include fear of Islam, lacking respect for human rights, economic aspects, unsolved case of Cyprus and others. These factors are selected on the basis of the frequency of their inclusion in publications and other sources. However, they are not evaluated in terms of the EU criteria, but the thesis brings a general view on the issue. The work thus gives the reader the opportunity to create a complete picture of contemporary Turkey and its efforts to join the EU.

The accession process of Croatia to the European Union

The presented master thesis focuses on the topical issue of Croatian Accession to the European Union that took a place on July 1, 2013. Croatia became the twenty-eighth member in the time of adverse economic situation in the old continent, especially in the monetary union -- Eurozone, which problems spread all over the Union. The aim of this thesis is to describe the course of the process and evaluate and analyze possible impacts and benefits for both parties. The thesis is divided into three main chapters. The first chapter informs about political background of the state and economical development. The second chapter describes the process itself and its aspects, whereas in the third chapter the author evaluates possible impacts and benefits of the accession.

Current status of the European Union Integration Process

This thesis aims to analyse current status of the European Union Integration Process. Firstly, the historical development of the European Union Integration Process is introduced. Its knowledge contributes to a better understanding of present incentives leading to the European Integration. Furthermore, the thesis focuses on a framework of the Accession Process applied by the Union in relation to countries willing to join this community. Within the Accession Process the mandatory criteria are also defined. That means for an applicant country a necessity to meet these conditions before entering the EU. Moreover, the financial assistance intended for the candidate countries and potential candidates is described. The main contribution of this thesis consists in analysing the Accession Process of five candidate countries, namely of Croatia, Iceland, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Turkey and Montenegro. This section describes each candidate in terms of the Accession Process development, perspective of joining the EU and financial assistance provided by the Union. Lastly, the economic activity of candidate countries is evaluated and the possible impacts on the European Union in case of their integration are presented.
